CATERPILLARS AND BUTTERFLIES

We have chosen the butterfly to represent believers who are in Jesus Christ. A caterpillar is a natural person to use St. Paul’s term for the state we are in before receiving Jesus as Savior. The butterfly is the final stage of a re-born life that began as a caterpillar. As we undergo transformation to become more Christ-like and spiritually-minded, we, like caterpillars and butterflies, experience major change. It does not yet appear what we will finally be like, but we do know that when Jesus comes, we will be like Him. As our minds are renewed, what could be called the pupae stage, we must depend on the Word of God to nourish us. As you read through the various links, remember the difference between a caterpillar and a butterfly. Pictures like those that follow will appear often as we discuss the two natures.

A caterpillar is a consuming, destroying, nearly immobile, self-concerned creature. It does all it can to survive and it contributes little to its world. A natural person, an unbeliever, is like a caterpillar.

The butterfly, by comparison, is free to travel from one place to another, taking life with it where it goes. The butterfly comes in many sizes, shapes, and beautiful colors. New Creatures in Christ have these same attributes.
